The monk Adelmo of Otranto —a young but famous manuscript illuminator— was suspiciously found dead on a hillside below a tower with only a window that could not be opened. The abbot seeks help from William, who is renowned for his deductive powers. William is reluctantly drawn in by the intellectual challenge and his desire to disprove fears of a demonic culprit.

For Gui, this is irrefutable proof of witchcraft, and he tortures Salvatore into a false confession. As both William’s Franciscan brothers and the papal delegates arrive, the debate begins. The abbey’s herbalist, after telling William he has found a book written in Greek in his dispensary, is murdered by what is revealed to be Malachia. The latter tricks Remigio into attempting to escape, causing him to be arrested by Gui’s guards and charged with the murders.

About This Product

There was the opportunity of efficiently describing the scenery and the people and the exciting labyrinthine puzzlebox monastery. Old days monastery movies stressed the purity and the ones later seemed focused on portraying the primitive lifestyle, the filthy ruled of hygiene in those days and sins of the unholy holy people. Both extremes are lies and both do harm and this is especialy evil when the truth is a wonder! So much good work and so many true healings and miracles and great deeds are slandered in both extreme portrayals.

Set in Italy in 1327, The Name of the Rose follows the Franciscan monk William of Baskerville and his novice Adso von Melk as they arrive at a secluded monastery in the Alps. There they become witnesses to a series of mysterious murders. While Baskerville and Melk investigate and search for the killer, they are hunted themselves by the merciless inquisitor Bernard Gui, who prosecutes those who criticize the pope. However, a series of other deaths do suggest that something evil is in fact going on. William is convinced that there is a connection between the books created there, in a single book that is considered evil. This book violates their beliefs by containing humor, and laughter to them is heresy.

Where To Stream:

Romantic movies whether comedy or tragedy succeed or fail on the chemistry of the leads, something The Name succeeded with for the most part. Jeon So Min gave a nice but not overly wrought performance as a woman with a complicated relationship with her mother, who was dealing with her own health concerns, and living with unrealized dreams. Choi Jung Won gave a charming turn as the down on his luck but rarely down in his mood artist whose success was just always out of reach. The remaining cast give perfunctory if not inspired performances. It’s one of those film’s that I just can’t get into, three times I have tried but it’s now consigned to the recycle bin, never to be unearthed again. I see there is great artistry there, it’s very literate and the mystery element is stron…

Remember this obscure film from the 1980s starring Sean Connery? Experience it again and see Christian Slater in one of his first roles . This is an original and smart film that is also visually stimulating and thought provoking. Witness life in the final days of the dark ages amidst a setting of mysterious murders in a gothic monastery. The costumes are authentic as is the reality of life depicted in this film.

William narrates his conclusions that Adelmo’s death was indeed suicide, due to giving in to Berengar’s requests for homosexual favors. Venantius received a parchment from Adelmo before Adelmo’s death, and Berengar is the only left-handed man in the abbey. William theorizes that the translator transcribed the Greek notes on the parchment from a book, and that the book is somehow responsible for the deaths. The abbot is unconvinced and, burning the parchment, he informs William that the Inquisition — in the person of Bernardo Gui, an old adversary of William from his former time as an inquisitor — has already been summoned.

With time running out, Venerable Jorge is confronted in the secret library by William and Adso. The Venerable informs them that he poisoned the pages of the sacred book, so that anyone who touches them will die by ingesting the poison. The book, in his opinion is dangerous, blasphemous, and suggestive. As the fire spreads, the locals are able to free the peasant girl before she meets the same fate as Salvator and Rmeigio, who have already burned at the stake.

William does not suspect them of murder though because Dulcinites target wealthy bishops, not poor monks. Nevertheless, Remigio’s past gives William leverage in learning the abbey’s secrets. Salvatore tells William that Adelmo had crossed paths with Venantius on the night that Adelmo died. Meanwhile, Adso encounters a beautiful, semi-feral, peasant girl who has sneaked into the abbey to trade sexual favors for food, and is seduced by her.

Based on the best-selling book by Italian author Umberto Eco. During a meeting of the papacy, a brilliant English monk, William of Baskerville, uses reason to solve a series of bizarre murders attributed to the devil–and risks being burned for heresy by the holy inquisition. Others find links between the deaths and the book of Revelation. He intends to find a murderer by using fact and reason – the tools of heresy.

Adso chases Gui, who manages to escape him, but the peasants push his wagon off a cliff, impaling him. As William and Adso depart, Adso encounters the girl, stops for a few seconds, but eventually chooses to go with William. The much older Adso states that he never regretted his decision as he learned many more things from William before their ways parted. He also says that the girl was the only earthly love of his life, but he never learned her name. William quickly deduces that Adelmo committed suicide, having jumped from a nearby tower having a window, and that the slope of the hill caused the body to roll below the other tower. William’s solution briefly allays the monks’ fears, until another Monk is found dead, ominously floating in a vat of pig’s blood.

After a hard confrontation with the abbot, the English monk has no choice but to solve the enigma of the “Finis Africae”. The Name of the Rose is a 1986 Italian-French-German drama mystery film directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud, based on the book of the same name by Umberto Eco. Sean Connery stars as the Franciscan friar William of Baskerville and Christian Slater is his apprentice Adso of Melk, who are called upon to solve a deadly mystery in a medieval abbey. Eight French Christian monks live in harmony with their Muslim brothers in a monastery perched in the mountains of North Africa in the 1990s. When a crew of foreign workers is massacred by an Islamic fundamentalist group, fear sweeps though the region. Despite the growing menace in their midst, they slowly realize that they have no choice but to stay…

I’m stumped by this bizarre detective story set in an Italian monastery in the year 1327. The acting, the casting, the pacing, it’s all way off, and yet it never dips below enjoyable. From the very first few moments you know you’re in for good time, and that does indeed turn out to be the case. This violent and turbulent time is all in the memories of the old narrator. After he and William left, he never saw him again but he never forgot him, or the girl who’s name he never knew. L missed the mark – it was not only the poor tech quality of the dvd that failed to tell the story really well !
