During manual tailgate operation, open or close it slowly. Do not use force to open/close it if there is resistance. I would start by taking the back cover off the tailgate to take a look at the mechanicals and the wiring. There was a thread about fitting a module into the tailgate to open and close from the remote and it had a video on how to remove the cover from the door.
It did later that day, only for it to latch beautifully once I got to the dealer. I’m going to hope that, like swhall experienced, this issue will get better and not worse. In addition to tailgate close button no longer working I have two other symptoms that appeared over the same timeframe. These may or may not be related but as I said I’m a bit suspicious. During closing – movement is interrupted, the tailgate stops, a long acoustic signal sounds and the tailgate returns to the programmed max. So, the only noise I heard was coming from the piston so I ordered and replaced that this morning.
You might have tried this, but if the power is disconnected you need to do a manual open and close cycle to reset it. I recall reading it in the manual when I had to do mine after a service. Even the Volvo technician didn’t know what was wrong and gave it back broken saying it needed to be booked in again for diagnosis. If its not that, the butoon pops out easily with a flat blade behind the bezel and you can short the wires to see if that works, which would suggest the button has failed. The challenge we are having is that the button on the tailgate does not close the tailgate automatically as it has up until this point. When the button is pressed there is no sound or movement at all from the TG.
SOLVED!! Tailgate locked and wont open, V50
I even managed to get the car to fully lock and set the alarm with the tailgate unlatched. It is also worth noting that your tailgate comes with a pinch protection. What this means is that when an object causes sufficient resistance, this feature prevents your tailgate from closing or opening, and this activates the pinch protection.
Anyhow, that’s when I heard the same noise that I think you described . After that it started working and has worked fine since. In and around that same time I had unplugged the lock actuator motor and sprayed some electric circuit cleaner on the plug-in connectors…not sure if that helped or not. If something with sufficient resistance prevents the tailgate from opening or closing then the pinch protection is activated.
Stop the opening/closing of the tailgate
My tailgate handle rod is rusty but is free, the button does light up but not tried the trick with the button yet, as in pins across the terminals. Not had this problem but I would definitely check the button/switch first. The tailgate’s movement is interrupted and stops.
One of those infuriating random things with vehicles. Yes, it was strange that the alarm activated even though the tailgate was not locked. Perhaps something like that has happened to your hatch. Perhaps is it that piece that the car uses to determine if the door is open or closed.
Opening and closing the power*-operated tailgate
If your starter battery is discharged when your tailgate has been opened, you need to close it manually. You should also perform this step when you have left the tailgate open for over 24 hours. Now, there are a few reasons why the power tailgate may fail or get stuck.

Failure of bleeding system, bad o-ring, I don’t know where to start. I am new to this group as I’ve just encountered my first volvo issue that looks tricky to solve, and I haven’t found a solution to my issue in the threads. I fiddled with the latch but it seemed to be in a “sprung” default position. “locks” but alas no fix until I had driven home.

I did the same with a screwdriver, making the latch open and close. I also spayed a bunch of white lithium grease into the whole mechanism and kept doing the screwdriver thing a bunch of times and it closes and latched fine ever since. I inspected everything up close last night with a flashlight in my garage. There were no screws or screwplate visible anywhere. The factory fitted tailgate carpet covered everything and I didn’t dare touch it for fear it would never fit back in place properly again without a visit to the dealership. We have experienced a similar problem today; although not quite the same.
Finally drove home fiddled with it one last time and it finally locked. Last night I couldn’t get the tailgate to close on my 03, 82k. In the case of a continuous operation of the system for quite some time, it typically switches off to prevent overload. Then, you can use it once more after 3 minutes or so.
Pinch protection
All other settings seems to be reset after service, so I will check this carefully after the first service. This just sounds like the time a friend had a £1000 lcd instrument panel replaced on his Mondeo when the fault was eventually traced back to a £14 sensor. 1 – as mentioned the button to close tailgate does not function. The power function does work otherwise though for opening the tailgate.
During opening – power tailgate operation is deactivated and the tailgate stops. If something with sufficient resistance prevents the tailgate from opening/closing then the pinch protection is activated. After several failed closing and locking attempts, the latch finally “gave” and clicked into place. We repeated this twice and it continued to latch securely into place.
Volvo XC60 Power Tailgate Problems
Another way is to press and hold the button on your remote control key. And lastly, push on the rubber pressure plate located under your outer handle. The car’s tailgate can be opened using a button on the instrument panel, using the rubberised pressure plate under the outside handle or by using the remote control key. Closing takes place using the close button at the bottom of the tailgate.
Thread: Power tailgate won’t open via remote or dashboard button
Press the button on the underside of the tailgate to close. Hbatt- There is another thread about this specific issue. Seems there are quite a few people reporting it. Someone mentioned Volvo has changed the design so hopefully you’ll get that when you get it replaced. Its been my belief that the traditional dealership model is broken and creates too many opportunities for error, instead more automation needs to be done.
