I was skeptical when I handled it and saw how small it was, but then I used it and that changed my opinion completely.
If so, you probably don’t need a hatchet capable of more controlled cutting and could go with a blunter edged tool more useful for splitting. Well I guess most of the time it will be used for splitting up firewood. I have read everything on GB about the various axes but I am looking for a compromise axe. Seems some are better for felling trees whereas others are better for splitting up firewood. Ideal for chopping, kindling, and splitting small-medium size logs. You can easily chop more wood in less time with very little effort.

If you’re on the hunt for the best camping axe, we swung 11 of the best to find the right one for you. We researched over 30 of the top options on the market before buying them to test their blades head-to-head in the real world. We bucked up fallen locust trees, split rounds, chopped kindling, and limbed and removed every invasive autumn olive tree we could find. I also carry various handsaws as well so this will be a “supporting tool” for smaller jobs. This axe was designed and sold as a little splitter, and note how everyone above here says that it splits well, and that it has a thicker, wedgier blade section. It’s a long and slow process, but it’s really hard to mess up. If you’re not comfortable with tools, this is the best way to do it. If you’re getting something with a plastic handle or a coated grip handle, you want to make sure that the hatchet is full tang. There are a few things to think about before deciding what kind of axe or hatchet will suit your camping style best.
The X11 and the Norden were made for it, after all, with the cutting edge curving up to a convex wedge. They both work exceedingly well and are a welcome break from our testing consultant’s normally massive splitting maul. If you don’t already have one, sounds like something along the lines of a GB Small Forest Axe or Hults Bruk Akka may be what you’re looking for. For backpacking I bring the Outdoor Axe along with a 7″ folding saw and 4″ knife. I chose the Akka over the SFA for the longer haft, over the Scandinavian Forest Axe for the lighter weight. Despite its length, this best gransfors bruks axe comfortably fits into a rucksack to take along with you on your camping, trekking, backpacking and hiking trips.

Gransfors Bruks Hunters Axe Analysis– Premium Quality
One of my personal favorite gadgets is the Everstryke pro (get yours here.) This waterproof lighter is one of the most resilient options when it comes to getting a fire going. Believe it or not, 30 years ago it was a different story. Gransfors Bruk mass produced cheap, bulk axes instead of the one-of-a-kind tools we see today. They would paint over cracks, use cheap varnish, and cut other corners to get tools out as cheaply as possible.
