Tercel 4wd wagons are far more refined, S-10 Blazers and Bronco IIs are roomier, and Quattros leave the poor Subaru choking on rubber smoke. Common wisdom holds that a car’s powertrain smoothness is determined by the vibration output of its engine, but this ignores the overwhelming effect of the exhaust system on perceived smoothness.

The only issues I know of are the windshield has a crack but it’s not in the view of the driver and when I first bought the car I only drove 3 miles to work, and that’s IF I drove this car. Normally I drove my ’93 Legacy and kept this parked in my driveway.

This car would not have been available with 4WD, at least for the North American market, whereas the wagon and Brat versions would have had that option. I am hoping it will go to someone who loves these cars and wants to continue to keep ‘er going for miles to come. It had sat unused for 20 years in Western Oklahoma, with just 92k original miles. After a few years of gentle revival it was ready for a good road trip.

In the recent past I’ve replaced both front axles, spark plugs, thermostat, cap and rotor, newer battery, fuel filter, air filter, I also recently had some solder joints repaired on the ECU. I always can appreciate & like ANY well preserved car. Haven’t we seen enough Camaros, Corvettes & Mustangs? Looking ahead, the wagon will get a starring role in the next Gymkhana film that’s scheduled to be released later in 2022. Naturally aspirated and turbocharged Subarus share engine mounts and a flat-four engine that is inherently smoother than an inline four of similar displacement. And yet the standard car feels like an out-of-balance meat grinder, whereas the turbo version is quite acceptable.
