Browning X Bolt Vs Remington 700

60deg bolt lift and a bench rest follower in a McMillian prone stock or the f-class stock and a #7 contor you have a great prone rifle. We finished off our set-up with a new Sightron Big Sky 3-12 x 42mm scope with the new Sightron ballistic reticle, the HHR reticle, secured with Warne Maxima steel medium-height quick-release rings. Though scope comparisons are not the focus of this article, we were so impressed with the tracking and clarity of the Sightron Big Sky that it deserves a mention.

(Hurray!) It is nice to see an economy barreled action that doesn’t come with a dull, matte finish. No economy rifle with which I am familiar uses a controlled feed action; they are all push feed designs with bolt face, plunger ejectors. The best entry level designs use bolt head mounted claw extractors of the Weatherby/Sako/M-16 type that take a decent bite on the case rim. Others use inferior designs, such as a small hook (common in .22 rimfires), spring clip or bolt face sliding designs of the Savage type. Needless to say, these cheap extractors are more prone to failure, leaving a fired case in the chamber and hopelessly jamming the action in the field.

There is a cocking indicator below the steel bolt shroud. A bolt unlock button is located directly behind the bolt handle to allow ejecting a chambered cartridge with the safety on. This is a considerably cruder version of the feature introduced on Browning’s flagship X-Bolt action, but it does the same thing.

Remember, you usually get what you pay for and cheap rifles are no exception to that general rule. The prices shown below are January 2014 MSRP rounded to the nearest dollar. Okay, on to the descriptions of our economy bolt action rifles . The fire control mechanisms in economy rifles are not machined steel parts. Instead, the internal parts are typically stamped from sheet metal and critical engagement surfaces are usually not polished. Plastic is substituted for steel wherever possible in order to cut costs.

Dual cocking cams reduce the force necessary to open the bolt. Remington must be proud of this rifle, as they put an “R” on the bolt knob, on the rear of the recoil pad, on the bottom of the pistol grip and wrote “Remington” on the side of the recoil pad. This is in addition to the usual stampings on the barreled action. Please bear in mind that this article is not intended to be an analysis of each of these rifles.

My post yesterday in reply to Leadfarmer was quickly taken down. Apparently I forgot to use ‘with all due respect’ before I said mean spirited yet logical things coupled with coars language. I’m a Remington fanboy from way back, but the quality of their latest offerings leaves a lot to be desired, same goes for browning. Honestly I’d be on the lookout for an older lightly used 700. The remington 700 only needs about $1K worth of work to be up to the steyrs capability. You must be drinking big greens koolaid and wipin your chin in thier full page ads.

Plus only one place that carries the Barbara but they are out of stock of the HMR Pro. Links have been added bellow for anyone who isn’t familiar with any of the particular models I mentioned. Remigntons and Knights used very good adjustable triggers, ones that you could get very light and you could get them set safely, and you could get them adjusted not safely. Or if the trigger got a lot of gunk in them, they could have issues.

My father in law has a browning xbolt medallion. Probably more fancy than a person needs but if you like browning and have a thousand dollars to spend you won’t be disappointed. And don’t forget to check out the latest analysis on guns and outdoor gear on fieldandstream.com.

Remington 700 vs. Browning X-Bolt: The Definitive Guide

Unscoped right out of the box, the Browning X-bolt weighed in at 7 pounds on the nose including its detachable box magazine. Browning has called attention to the X-Bolt’s new trigger, so that’s the first thing we looked at. It broke at a very crisp and repeatable 4 pounds; we felt it was a superb hunting trigger. I’ll start out by saying I’ve never owned a 700 nor have I shot one for any extended period of time. I have a couple Ruger M77 Mark II (.270 and .223) and a X-Bolt (.308).

As you can tell the major difference between the Tikka T3 vs T3x is a 3/4lb weight difference due to the steel lug improvement in the T3x and the different T3x stocks. This sophisticated rifle should appeal to accuracy nuts and , long range shooters. The least expensive Vanguard Series 2 model is the synthetic stocked, matte blued version described here. Ruger has invented a new system for bedding the American’s barreled action in its stock. Named “Power Bedding,” it used two sets of steel V-blocks permanently molded into the synthetic stock.

I believe the rifle was toped with a leupold 2-7. The owner and I were both managing 3/4″ groups with the cheap FMJ Russian stuff. In the 1980s the Model 700 adapted into the U.S. army’s M-24 Sniper Weapon System, and in 2010 the army began upgrading those rifles to the new M2010 Enhanced Sniper Rifle standard. The Model 700 is also a popular platform for civilian precision rifle shooters looking for an accurate, easily customizable rifle. Quite possibly the most popular long gun of the twentieth century, the Remington 700 has dominated the bolt action hunting market since its release in 1962.

They want to make a rifle that fills every niche. We attribute this to the Monte Carlo-style raised stock of the Savage, which invariably adds a few ounces as opposed to the straight-stocked Browning and Remington offerings. The Savage “American Classic” series (as opposed to the tested “Classic” evaluated here) has the non-Monte Carlo straight stock, and weighs commensurately less. But we admit that didn’t affect the gun’s accuracy.

The single stage, grooved trigger is adjustable for weight of pull between 2-4 pounds, an excellent feature. The one-piece, machined bottom iron / trigger guards found on the best rifles are absent from almost all economy rifles. Instead, the manufacturers have substituted incredibly cheap plastic parts. Often these rifles use cheap detachable box magazines, made of sheet metal or plastic, to avoid the necessity of inletting an internal magazine and fitting a hinged magazine floor plate and latch.

And most of the time you’ll buy one that is acurate. X-bolts are great firearms out of the box with little aftermarket support. Hunting Critic asked 30 users on online forums about hunting. We found that 60 percent of users who responded prefered the Browning X-bolt over the Remington 700. Although, many of the people who said the X-Bolt was better, also states that they thought the Remington was a good rifle too.

The American series rifles are very affordable, with a street price often under $400. The combination of features and the attractive price tag has prompted some gun writers to describe the rifle as the Remington Model 700 for the twenty-first century. A strong aftermarket selection of parts is available for the American Rifle for shooters interested in building an entry-level long range precision rifle. These are competent hunting rifles and each offers features that will appeal to many shooters.

Browning X-Bolt or Remington 700

I’ve had my .308 X-bolt for a year now so the new hasn’t quite worn off of it but when I do get the itch to buy another caliber it will most likely be an X-bolt. MarineHawk- When I looked at the remington model 770’s I lost a lot of respect for the company. Then when I seen one fired at the range, and the shooter cycled the bolt and completely and unintentionally pulled the bolt out of the receiver, I lost the rest of what little respect was left. I personally really like the 60 degree bolt throw of the X-Bot. On your current rifle, you should put higher rings on it if your bolt is riding too close to the scope. The remington 700 mountain rifle tips the scales at just over 6 lbs, but the standard contour rifles are around 7.5 lbs.
