How To Set Up A Highline Slackline

6 min read

The Alpine Weblock 5.0 (AWL 5.0) is the newest in a long line of amazing weblocks from Balance Community. Designed for the modern highline with low tensions and minimum tensioning equipment, the Alpine Weblock 5.0 makes rigging easier and safer. The new design is extremely lightweight without any compromise in strength.

Position your head upright and face the end point or the fix point end two further away from where you stand. Looking at the line for so long will interfere with your balance as it appears to be moving. While it’s really a personal choice, there’s more to it. If you decide to walk barefoot, you risk sustaining cuts or minor injuries from the rope. On the other hand, without shoes, you feel every movement under your feet. A great reason to go outside and set up your slackline, so which better place than in your own garden during those times of quarantine?

SLACKLINE

Check out my guide to slackline safety to learn all the most common ways people are injured on slacklines so you can avoid them. Sometimes the configuration of the trees in your garden doesent allow the slackline to cross your lawn in the center. If you have 2 anchors you can create a connection between these anchors with slings and create another anchor in between. Like that you have more options to adjust the position of the slackline in your garden.

If you don´t have any trees in your garden, the Independence Kit Classic will be your “go to”. It is a stand-alone solution composed of 2 Slackline frames, 2 ground screws and a slackline. We’ll focus on setting up a beginner’s line like the Gibbon Classic slackline which uses a ratchet system, though these fundamentals can apply to most setups. Before learning how to set up a slackline, let’s quickly go the different parts of the line so that it’s easier. This weather-resistant set of a-frame anchors is super portable, so you can set up a slackline anywhere. When my right foot is firmly on the line, I’ll put my right hand behind me, and my left hand in front of my right foot.

Step 6: Set It Up – Slackline

Darrin returned to that same spot with Scott in April of 1995. With absolute determination and the intended domination of his goal to become the ultimate highliner, Darrin made eight consecutive one way crossings of this 65-foot span. He could feel within himself that his purpose in life now made sense. I am not against primitive rigs at all, but I think beginners will have more fun using a slackline line without having to learn a ton of rigging skills. Cons to setting up a slackline with primitive rigs.

I’ll push off the line to create some leverage, and then put all of my weight onto my right foot. My right hand will be waving in the air to help with balance, and my left hand is still holding the line creating some extra pressure. I will then bring my left foot up to the line, and then squat upwards to stand up with both feet now on the line. Next thing I know I’m shimmying myself away from the rock face and giving myself distance from the cliff.

How to set up a slackline in your garden (With or without trees)

However the cheapest slack line “kits” available are around fifty bucks, i made this one for about half of that. This instructable will show you how to set up your own slackline. Setting up and walking longlines takes a lot of commitment as the extra length presents many challenges for the slackliner. The mental resilience and a strong will are the decisive factors besides the aforementioned requirements. “Head-fitness” is determined on the one hand by the personality type and secondly by safe rigging, safe walking and safe catching. A good methodology of getting there, could be a gradual increase in stress.

This is when it’s especially critical to check for redundancy. I am hoping to explore several different types of highline anchors with pros, cons, and suggestions on how to make them better using this guide as a template. As you can guess, highlining involves walking slackline up high. We still had that visual image of Jeff and Adam wanting to walk “The Spire.” Yet Adam and Jeff had made the attempt with cable, not slackline. While the cable was strong, it proved to be too difficult at this length without guy lines. Therefore, our experimentation proved worth while in the pursuit of slackline accomplishments.

Slackline 101 how to set up a slackline

In this situation, you have a tree in your garden..but only one. Therefore, you will need to build an anchor to attach the slackline on the other side. In the best case scenario, the ground of your garden is cross. Consequently, a ground screw and a slackline frame will be enough.

They talk about “the end of the beginning”. While it feels like I’ve been training on the slackline for a while now, this is just the beginning. I’m still a white belt in the world of slackline. While you feel like you’ve been on the path for a while, you’re actually just getting started and have a very long journey ahead.

Kit Add-ons:

The BlueWater II+plus is the standard for use in caving, rappelling, and rescue applications. Its design of double twist cabled sheath strands as well as double twist cabled core strands to make it the best all-around choice in static/low elongation ropes. Polyester sheath, nylon core for an excellent balance of construction. We recommend setting the line 1.5 to 2 feet off the ground for kids and 2 to 2.5 feet high for adults. At these heights, you will want to set the line across a shorter span as the line will sag in the middle. Pacing, barking instructions, impatient and ready to go, Darrin had a unique way of psyching himself up.

To connect the 2 slings with the line you will need a shackle or a steel carabiner. Make sure to close it well to avoid any failure. Find out what distance is missing, get an extra round sling with the needed size and Connect it with the ratchet strap or another sling using the so called girth hitch knot. The perfect solution for a garden without any trees.

Option 1: You are lucky and have trees (big enough) in your garden

I looked at videos on instagram of people walking the exact line I was about to walk and imagined it was me. As I said in the instructable, I recommend 1 inch military spec. Other than the use of a water knot for webbing this is a great instructable. Give me a break on tri-loading the carabiners. The tree’s shown in the picture are not wide enough to worry about tri-loading. In theory a tri-link would be better but the carabiners have plenty safety factor.

I can’t get enough momentum in my barrel roll. I can’t get myself back on top of the line. Even worse, as I’m desperately trying to roll onto the line, it’s now violently shaking, making it nearly impossible to maintain my grip.

Can I use my Slackline ratchet to do highlining?

The high stress level causes a strong adrenalin rush which amplifies your feelings. If you succeed in keeping control you will feel very intense moments of joy and deep inner peace. If the fear is dominant or you fall off the line, the inner walls of frustration and doubt will increase.

Without a doubt, the person most inspired in the field of highlining is Darrin Carter. I have known Darrin since I was eleven years old. Through the years, I have been fortunate to witness his character and skill come to fruition in the field of slacklining.
